Vienna Economic Talks - Sofia Meeting

Environmental Economy for Green Bulgaria

VET – Sofia meeting was organised by Vienna Economic Forum and European Centre for Environmental Economy (ECEE) in co-operation with the Ministry of Economy, Energy and Tourism of the Republic of Bulgaria under the Patronance of the Prime Minister of the Republic of Bulgaria and Patron of the Vienna Economic Forum, H.E. Boyko BORISSOV.

The event started with a press conference, in which President of Vienna Economic Forum and Former Vice Chancellor of Austria Dr. Erhard Busek, Secretary General Amb. Dr. Elena Kirtcheva and President of European Center for Environmental Economy (ECEE) Ms. Roumiana Taslakowa signed the Memorandum of Understanding between Vienna Economic Forum and ECEE for a cooperation between the two organizations and the support of initiatives of each organisation in order to enlarge their networks and range of activities and to share information to support the members of both organisations. Furthermore they were prepared to answer the questions of the press participating in the VET – Sofia Meeting.

Vienna Economic Forum President Dr. Erhard Busek together with Secretary General Amb. Dr. Elena Kirtcheva and ECEE President Ms. Roumiana Taslakowa opened the conference and welcomed more than 250 participants who attended the conference and were impressed by the high number of participants and the enourmous interest also of the media who covered this event .

In his opening statement Dr. Busek was proud to introduce ECEE and to underline the close cooperation between the two organisations, of which the first activity was the organisation of this VET – Sofia meeting on 25-26 April 2010. In her Welcome Address Amb. Dr. Kirtcheva mentioned that she was glad to see so many participants interested in the topics of “Environmental Economy for Green Bulgaria” and they especially welcomed H.E. Mr. Gerhard Reiweger, Ambassador of the Republic of Austria in Bulgaria and Dr. Michael Angerer, Trade Commissioner of the Republic of Austria in Bulgaria.

It was a honour that H.E. Ambassador Reiweger invited high representatives of Austrian companies and companies from the region to a Reception at the Austrian Embassy in Sofia, especially on the occasion of the VET – Sofia meeting.

Topics of the two days conference were:

  • The EU Strategy for the Danube Region. Danube Tourism. Danube Co-operation process – Linking CEE and SEE
  • Infrastructure and Energy
  • Energy in 2011 and beyond – cooperation and perspectives
  • Energy – Concrete Projects. Development of Gas Industry. Diversification.
  • Infrastructure projects – Challenges for the Environment and the Private Sector
  • Finance, Banking and Insurance Sector
  • Current Challenges and Future Perspectives after VET – Sofia Meeting

H.E. Mr. Simeon Djankov, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Finance of the Republic of Bulgaria, took part in the Opening Plenary Session together with H.E. Mr. Traicho Traikov, Minister of Economy, Energy and Tourism of the Republic of Bulgaria and H.E. Mr. Nona Karadjova, Minister for Environment and Water of the Republic of Bulgaria.

On the occasion of this high-level panel VEF President Dr. Erhard Busek conveyed his thanks to the Government of the Republic of Bulgaria and especially to H.E. Prime Minister Mr. Boyko Borissov, the Patron of Vienna Economic Forum. He officially handed over the Letter of Confirmation of the Patronage and Welcome ad Patron of Vienna Economic Forum to H.E. Deputy Prime Minister Mr. Simeon Djankov as high representative of H.E. Prime Minister Borissov.

H.E. Mr. Traicho Traikov gave an overview of the current situation of economy and energy policy in Bulgaria and the challenges of today. An Impulse Statement was also given by Mr. Andreas Maierhofer, CEO of MobilTel AD Bulgaria, who were Main Partner of Vienna Economic Forum during the VET – Sofia Meeting.

After the high interest of Vienna Economic Forum members in the energy topics and the many cooperation opportunities given in this field, the Energy Workshops planned for this event took place parallel to cover the main topics and to meet the demand of participants. The workshops were moderated by Mr. Slavtcho Neykov, Director of Energy Community Secretariat in Vienna and Mr. Otto Musilek, Director of Management Energy Consulting and Member of Vienna Economic Forum. Both workshops covered a range of different topics and raised interesting discussions between the panellists and the audience. Participants were amongst many others Prof. Dr. Vesna Borozan of Ss. Cyril and Methodius University Skopje, Mr. Sasho Dontchev, Executive Director of Overgas Inc. AD, Mr. Dimitar Gogov, Executive Director, Bulgargaz EAD, high representatives of RWE, E.ON, Siemens, User Dis Ticaret, Elprom Zem Plc, EVN AG, Deloitte, Austro Energy Services and Biogest.

The infrastructure projects which were presented in the Third Plenary Session gave a broad overview of present projects and planned steps in the public and private sector. The participants in this session, among them high-ranking Members of Vienna Economic Forum, were high representatives of the Bulgarian Industrial Association, Group Bouygues, Wolf Theiss Attorneys at law, Asfinag and Free Zone Pirot.

Lively discussions were held during the Finance, Banking and Insurance Sector session, where the speakers openly spoke about the current economic situation, its challenges and ways and possibilities to handle the crisis further. Representatives of Members of Vienna Economic Forum who took the floor were from Bulgarski Imoti Vienna Insurance Group, Uniqa Bulgaria AD, Allianz Bulgaria Holding AD and UniCredit Bulbank.

After hours of interesting discussions and networking between the participants the Conclusion plenary session had the topic “Current Challenges and Future Perspectives after VET – Sofia Meeting”. Moderated by Dr. Erhard Busek, President of Vienna Economic Forum, the session led together H.E. Minister Nona KaradjovaAmb. Dr. Elena Kirtcheva, Secretary General of Vienna Economic Forum, Trade Commissioner Dr. Michael Angerer andDr. Mitko Vassilev, Director of Deutsch-Bulgarische Industrie- und Handelskammer. They agreed that it had been proven in this conference that the steps in the right direction had been taken and the official will to continue in this direction has been expressed.

Thus, the task of VET – Sofia Meeting had been successfully fulfilled - it has covered a broad range of different topics and challenges of how to manage environmental and energy topics in the economic range.

Meet Bosnia and Herzegovina in Vienna

Die Konferenz “Vienna Economic Talks – Meet Bosnia and Herzegovina in Vienna” war ein außergewöhnlicher Erfolg in der Reihe der spezialisierten Meetings von Vienna Economic Forum. Es war eine Ehre für Präsident Dr. Erhard Busek und Generalsekretärin Botschafterin a.D. Dr. Elena Kirtcheva, eine hochrangige Delegation aus Bosnien und Herzegovina, unter der Führung von S.E. Dr. Nikola Spiric, Chairman of the Council of Ministers von Bosnian und Herzegovina, zu empfangen und konkrete Projekte während der zwei Tage intensiver Gespräche zu erörtern.

Die Konferenz wurde von S.E. Dr. Nikola Spiric eröffnet und es gab einführende Statements von S.E. Herrn Andreas Schieder, Staatssekretär des Bundesministeriums für Finanzen der Republik Österreich und S.E. Botschafter Dr. Valentin Inzko, Hoher Repräsentant und EU Special Representative in BiH, der zu diesem Meeting gekommen war um auch hier, in Wien, die weitere wirtschaftliche Kooperation mit BiH zu unterstützen.

Es war das Ziel von Vienna Economic Forum, nach dem erfolgreichen Vienna Economic Talks – Sarajevo Meeting am 27.-28. September 2009 nun diese Veranstaltung in Wien fortsetzen dürfen und mehr als 160 Teilnehmer aus 13 Ländern begrüßen zu dürfen.

Hochrangige Minister und Vertreter von Ministerien aus Bosnien und Herzegovina, die mit Statements und Präsentationen aktiv an der Konferenz teilnahmen, waren:

Ein wichtiger Schwerpunkt der Veranstaltung war die Erörterung konkreter Investitionsprojekte in diversen Wirtschaftssektoren in Bosnien und Herzegovina. So konnte durch die Anwesenheit der Transportminister S.E. Herr Rudo VIDOVIC, S.E. Herr Nedeljko CUBRILOVIC und S.E. Herr Nail SECKANOVIC konkrete Fragen beantwortet werden und die Bedeutung zukünftiger Projekte im Infrastruktursektor von Bosnien und Herzegovina wurde unterstrichen.

Das große Interesse vieler VEF-Mitglieder und interessierte Firmen aus Österreich, aus Bosnien und Herzegovina, aus der Region des Vienna Economic Forum und auch aus vielen anderen Ländern, wurde in den interessanten Diskussionen sichtbar und viele neue Kontakte konnten geknüpft werden, sodass Vienna Economic Talks „Meet BiH in Vienna“ für die weitere wirtschaftliche Stabilisierung des Landes beitragen werden und damit, für die gesamte Entwicklung der ganzen Region.

Vienna Economic Talks

Chisinau Meeting, 24-25 June 2010, Chisinau, Moldova

On 24-25 June 2010 Vienna Economic Talks – Chisinau meeting took place in Chisinau, the capital of the Republic of Moldova. This event was organised by Vienna Economic Forum and the Ministry of Economy of the Republic of Moldova, in co-operation with the Moldovan Investment and Export Promotion Organization (MIEPO), under the patronage of the Prime Minister of the Republic of Moldova and Patron of the Vienna Economic Forum, H.E. Mr. Vladimir FILAT, as the core of the Moldova Business Week 2010, an ambitious economic program by the Government of Moldova with aim to attract the interest of the foreign investors.

Secretary General Amb. Dr. Elena Kirtcheva in her welcome address was proud to greet around 400 participants from many countries (Austria, Azerbaijan, Bulgaria, Estonia, France, Greece, Japan, the host Moldova, the Netherlands, Romania, Turkey, Ukraine) and also from International Institutions - the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD), from World Bank, from Black Sea Trade and Development Bank. She mentioned that the organisation of Moldovan Business Week 2010 and Vienna Economic Talks-Chisinau Meeting will be of great importance in the aim to find the suitable investors on the topics of the Chisinau – Meeting and provides a good basis for further and more intensive cooperation.

The President of Vienna Economic Forum and former Vice Chancellor of Austria Dr. Erhard Busek in his statement stated that Vienna Economic Forum is organising such a high-level conference already for the second time in Chisinau,  with an active participation of Vienna Economic Forum members and investors in the region. He underlined the strategic importance of Moldova for the region and its efforts to attract foreign direct investment.

H.E. Mr. Vladimir FILAT, Prime Minister of the Republic of Moldova, Patron of Vienna Economic Forum, in his welcome address mentioned the high importance of organizing such a meeting and thanked Vienna Economic Forum and its members for their interest to participate actively in VET – Chisinau Meeting.

H.E. Mr. Valeriu LAZĂR, Deputy Prime Minister, Minister of Economy of Moldovagave an overview of Moldova’s Economy. State Policy and investment Opportunities and the challenges of today.

The special interest of the Austrian representatives in Moldova could also be seen in the participation of 17 companies from Austria and around 30 companies from the region in Vienna Economic Talks – Chisinau Meeting, who especially came to Moldova for this event.

It was an honour for the official guests, high-level representatives of companies from Austria and the region, to be invited to a tour in the Cricova Cellars, followed by a festive dinner, hosted by H.E. Prime Minister Vladimir Filat, which was given especially on the occasion of the Vienna Economic Talks – Chisinau  Meeting.

  • How to attract Investors in Moldovan Health Sector. Diverse Concrete Projects.
  • Overview of Moldova’s Economy, State Policy and Investment Opportunities
  • Concrete Projects in diverse economic Sectors in the Republic of Moldova
  • Current Challenges and future Perspectives after VET – Chisinau Meeting 2010
