Vienna Insurance Group extends Managing Board appointments

The Supervisory Board of Vienna Insurance Group AG Wiener Versicherung Gruppe has renewed the Managing Board contracts of Peter Hagen, Franz Kosyna, Martin Simhandl, Franz Fuchs and Peter Höfinger for a further five years. Their terms of office will run from 1 July 2013 to 30 June 2018. Peter Hagen has been reappointed Chairman of the Managing Board.

Dr. Barbara Kolm, Generalsekretärin des Hayek Instituts, strategischer Partner des Vienna Economic Forum, hat gemeinsam mit dem Austrian Economics Center einen Wettbewerb initiiert.

Unter dem Ehrenschutz von S.E. Bundeskanzler Werner Faymann und S.E. Vizekanzler Michael Spidelegger findet ein Kreativwettbewerb mit dem Titel Mobility for the NeXt Generation statt. SchülerInnen sollen motiviert werden, sich mit Fragen der Mobilität – reeller, virtueller, der von Personen, Gütern oder Wissen, Mobilität des Geistes – auseinanderzusetzen, Ideen zu entwickeln und in weiterer Folge Mitsprache bei Entscheidungen, die ihre Zukunft betreffen auszuüben.

Eröffnung von Wasserkraftwerk Ashta in Albanien

Erstes gemeinsames internationales Großprojekt fertig gestellt

Die Projektgesellschaft „Energji Ashta“ und ihre Eigentümer VERBUND AG und EVN AG, Kooperationspartner des Vienna Economic Forum, eröffneten im September in Albanien eine Weltneuheit: das größte Matrix-Wasserkraftwerk aus Kleinturbinen.

Die Eröffnungsfeierlichkeiten erfolgten in Anwesenheit von S.E. Prof. Sali Berisha, Premierminister von Albanien und Patron des Vienna Economic Forum, Frau Jozefina Topalli, Parlamentspräsidentin von Albanien und Frau Dr. Barbara Prammer, Präsidentin des Nationalrats der Republik Österreich sowie Dr. Wolfgang Anzengruber, Vorstandsvorsitzender von Verbund AG, DI Dr. Günter Rabensteiner, Mitglied des Vorstandes von Verbund AG und Mitglied des Vorstandes des Vienna Economic Forum, Dr. Ulrike Baumgartner-Gabitzer, Mitglied des Vorstandes von Verbund AG, Mag.
Stefan Szyszkowitz, Mitglied des Vorstandes von EVN AG und Mitglied des Vorstandes des Vienna Economic Forum, und Vorstandsdirektor Dipl.-Ing. Das Wasserkraftwerk Ashta wurde im Norden Albaniens, nahe der viertgrößten Stadt des Landes, Shkoder in den letzten 30 Monaten gebaut. Es ist die größte Investition der letzten 30 Jahre am albanischen Energiemarkt. In Ashta werden künftig jährlich 240 Mio. kWh Strom erzeugt, 100.000 albanische Haushalte können so mit erneuerbarer Energie versorgt werden.

Das Kraftwerk Ashta wird nach der Fertigstellung Strom für 100.000 Haushalte in Albanien erzeugen, schafft Arbeitsplätze und gibt der Region und dem Land positive Wirtschaftsimpulse. Es verbessert die Versorgungssicherheit und hilft, die Abhängigkeit Albaniens von Stromimporten zu reduzieren. Es ist umweltverträglich geplant und produziert keine Emissionen. Am Ende der 35-jährigen Konzessionsperiode geht das Kraftwerk an die Republik Albanien.
Die verantwortlichen österreichischen Energieunternehmen VERBUND und EVN stehen bei der Umsetzung für hohe Standards und Verlässlichkeit in allen Belangen. Die gesamte Bandbreite des Wasserkraft Know-hows wird dabei eingesetzt. Das Projekt wird zudem nach höchsten Umweltstandards errichtet und bekommt auch die erste Fischaufstiegshilfe in Albanien. Dadurch wird den Fischen erstmals seit den 70er Jahren des vorigen Jahrhunderts ermöglicht, unbehindert vom Spathara Stausee bis zur Adria zu schwimmen.

Das Projekt Ashta wurde nach den Regeln des Clean Development Mechanism (CDM) der United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) errichtet. Es wird keine CO2 Emissionen ausstoßen und spart als Wasserkraftwerk zusätzlich jährlich rund 114.000 Tonnen CO2. Der CDM sieht einen umfangreichen Dialog mit den Anspruchsgruppen vor, der hier, auf in Albanien bislang einzigartige Weise, umgesetzt wurde. Neben einem professionellen Stakeholder Management auf nationaler Ebene wurden lokale und Anspruchsgruppen wie Gemeindepolitik, Anrainer, Bevölkerung in regelmäßigen Bürgerinformationsveranstaltungen umfangreich informiert.

15 Jahre lang wird der in Ashta produzierte Strom zur Gänze von Korporata Elektroenergjetike Shqiptare (KESH), dem staatlichen albanischen Energieversorger, abgenommen. Danach kann der Vertrag entweder verlängert oder die elektrische Energie frei am Markt verkauft werden.

TPA Horwath, Mitglied des Vienna Economic Forum, lud am 19. September zur Veranstaltung "SEE im Fokus: Chancen, Risken und Ausblick" mit einer Key Note durch Herrn Dr. Erhard Busek, Präsident des Vienna Economic Forums, in Kooperation mit dem Vienna Economic Forum ein.
Leopold Kühmayer und Klaus Bauer-Mitterlehner - beide Partner bei TPA Horwath - freuten sich über die große Anzahl an Besucherinnen und Besuchern. 70 Teilnehmerinnen und Teilnehmer kamen, um sich den Vortrag "Chancen trotz Krise? Wirtschaftliche Perspektiven Südeuropas" von Herrn Dr. Busek anzuhören.

Auch einige Wirtschaftsdelegierte waren an diesem Abend vertreten: Dr. Michael Angerer, Wirtschaftsdelegierter von Bulgarien, Mag. Andreas Haidenthaler, Wirtschaftsdelegierter von Serbien, Mag. Rudolf Lukavsky, Wirtschaftsdelegierter von Rumänien und Mag. Roman Rauch, Wirtschaftsdelegierter von Kroatien.

Dr. Erhard Busek, Vizekanzler a.D. und Präsident des Vienna Economic Forums, wurde von Dr. Elena Kirtcheva, Botschafterin a.D. und Generalsekretärin des Vienna Economic Forums, begleitet. Im Anschluss an den Vortrag Buseks nahmen unsere CEE-Experten Thomas Haneder und Klaus Krammer das Marktumfeld in Südosteuropa genauer unter die Lupe.

Bled Strategic Forum - new partner of Vienna Economic Forum

Ms. Miriam Mozgan, Secretary General of Bled Strategic Forum, and Amb. Dr. Elena Kirtcheva, Secretary General of Vienna Economic Forum, signed a Memorandum of Understanding for further cooperation between the two organisations and developing joint activities, on the occasion of the 7th Bled Strategic Forum on 2-3 September 2012.

The two organisations also agreed to exchange information on economic developments in the region and update each other on activities in the economic field and will promote efforts to enhance their relations.

The Special consultative status of Vienna Economic Forum enables us to actively engage with ECOSOC and its subsidiary bodies, as well as with the United Nations Secretariat, programmes, funds and agencies in a number of ways. Thus, Vienna Economic Forum can further extend our activities in several regions of Europe and the worls, and establish new possibilities for our members and partners.

UBCCE, Partner of Vienna Economic Forum

UBCCE (Union of Black Sea and Caspian Confederation of Enterprises) supports the "Common Position" of the nine European leading business associations on business visa liberalisation with Russia, Turkey and Eastern Europe. According to the position also signed by UBCCE member TÜSİAD, business visa requirements are a substantial impediment to international business; hence, their liberalization is a precondition for growth and job creation.

The signatory organizations, representing more than one million companies in the EU, are therefore asking the governments of the Schengen area, as well as the European Commission to conclude negotiations with the Republic of Moldova, Russia, Turkey and Ukraine, aiming at reciprocal liberalization of business visa requirements, the sooner the better and furthermore to launch negotiations with all remaining Eastern Partnership countries, including Kazakhstan, as soon as possible.

The signatory organizations also invite the business associations across the European Union, as well as in the neighboring countries, to join them in this initiative and forward their request to those responsible for business visa regulation in the respective countries.

Event of Biopolitics International Organisation, partner of Vienna Economic Forum

Vienna Economic Forum is proud to announce that on June 18, 2012, the Biopolitics International Organisation, partner of Vienna Economic Forum, and the Hellenic Chapter of the Club of Rome organized a luncheon reception under the auspices of H.E. Mr. Abdelkader El Ansari, Ambassador of Morocco. The event was themed “Green Governance – Building a Society of Hope – The Case of Morocco” and featured Professor Assia Bensalah Alaoui, Morocco’s Ambassador-at-Large, as keynote speaker. It convened distinguished personalities, academics, business leaders and other people of influence to discuss Mediterranean policies and new opportunities for growth and recovery with the aim of building a society of hope.

The event was chaired by Professor Agni Vlavianos Arvanitis, President and Founder of the Biopolitics International Organisation and the Hellenic Chapter of the Club of Rome, and attended by Ambassadors and dignitaries from 24 countries, including Greece, Morocco, Belgium, Argentina, Canada, Switzerland, Mexico, Algeria, Armenia, Iraq, Jordan, Peru, the Philippines, Serbia, Thailand, Tunisia, Ukraine, Vietnam, Palestine, FYROM, Turkey, Luxemburg, India and Angola. „Culinary and Musical Journey through the partner countries of Vienna Economic Forum“

On 15. June 2012 the Board of Vienna Economic Forum together with the Ambassadors of the Member countries invited to the 11th Traditional Garden Party „Culinary and musical journey through the partner countries of Vienna Economic Forum.

This year our Garden Party took place in the garden of the Embassy of Ukraine, and was organized together with H.E. Mr.  Andrii Bereznyi, Ambassador of Ukraine. According to our motto „for a better understanding“ we had the reason to celebrate one event together, which also unites all people around the world, entrepreneurs, politicians, artists and sportsmen – the European Football Championship, which took place both in Ukraine and in Poland.

Central European Initiative (CEI) - Vienna Economic Forum:

Memorandum of Understanding Signed Today in Trieste

Amb. Gerhard Pfanzelter, CEI Secretary General, and Amb. Elena Kirtcheva, Secretary General of the Vienna Economic Forum, signed today, at the CEI Headquarters in Trieste, a Memorandum of Understanding which paves the way for enhancing cooperation between the two organisations and developing joint activities.

The Vienna Economic Forum was founded in 2004 with the aim to promote investment opportunities in the region from the Adriatic to the Black Sea and Caspian Region. The main conference of Vienna Economic Forum takes place every year in November, gathering business representatives and decision makers from all around the world.

Considering the role played by the CEI in promoting economic development of the countries of the region, especially through the CEI partnership with the EBRD, the involvement of the CEI in the Forum is envisaged.

This year the Forum will be organized in Vienna on 18-19 November 2012. The CEI, with its well established intergovernmental structures, could complement the partnership of the Vienna Economic Forum, which mainly includes private sector representatives.

The two organisations also agreed to exchange information on economic developments in the region and update each other on activities in the economic field. Furthermore, they will nominate focal points in order to develop bilateral cooperation. Lastly, they will promote efforts to enhance their media relations, especially taking advantage of the cooperation among news agencies which the CEI is currently promoting.

Novomatic - Worldwide More Than 3 Billion EUR Revenues with 18,000 Staff

Vienna Economic Forum congratulates its cooperation partner NOVOMATIC Group to a new record of revenues of 3.2bn EUR.

Dr. Franz Wohlfahrt, CEO of NOVOMATIC AG and Member of the Board of Vienna Economic Forum: “We owe these excellent results to our successful strategy of anticyclical investments in economically challenging times, to accurate optimising measures as well as to the exceptional commitment of our employees“

The NOVOMATIC AG reports new record figures for the fiscal year 2011: with revenues amounting to 1.387bn EUR (plus 17,2%) (2010: 1.184bn EUR). The EBITDA (earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation and amortisation) increased by 9,2% to 491m EUR (2010: 449m EUR). In 2011 the NOVOMATIC AG employed an annual average of 11,818 staff (2010: 10,544) which is a rise of 12%. 2,850 of the staff work in Austria.

The total revenues of the NOVOMATIC Group – comprising NOVOMATIC AG as well as the two Swiss affiliates ACE Casino Holding AG and Gryphon Invest AG – hit in 2011 for the first time the landmark of three billion Euros: the added, non-consolidated revenues amounted to 3.193bn EUR (2010: 2.816bn EUR), which is a plus of 13,4%. The EBITDA of the NOVOMATIC Group rose by 17,2%, reaching 652m EUR (2010: 556m EUR). The Group counted 18,000 staff (2010: 17,000, plus 6%) worldwide.

One month before the upcoming “Vienna Economic Talks - Meet Turkey in Vienna“ on 18-19 June 2012 in Vienna, Secretary General Amb. Dr. Elena Kirtcheva was pleased to welcome Ambassador Dr. Heidemaria Gürer, former Austrian Ambassador to Turkey and now Head of Department for Eastern Europe, Western Balkans, Southern Caucasus, Central Asia and Central European Initiative at the Federal Ministry for European and International Affairs of the Republic of Austria and Austrian Honorary Consuls in Turkey for a meeting in the premises of Vienna Economic Forum.

The Honorary Consuls of Antakya, Antalya, Bodrum, Edrine, Izmir and Samsun have engaged in supporting the further development of Austro-Turkish relations in any area and they were very interested to discuss possibilities of future cooperation with Vienna Economic Forum.

Dr. Josef Taus, first president of Vienna Economic Forum, informed about the wealth of experience of Management Trust Holding (MTH) and Mr. Ahmet Mesut Erosy, CEO DenizBank AG, informed about the official opening ceremony of a further branch of DenizBank in Baden, on 19 June 2012 at 6 p.m., following Vienna Economic Talks - Meet Turkey in Vienna“.

Interview mit Präsident Dr. Erhard Busek im Bulgarischen Wirtschaftsblatt

Die Arbeitskosten und hoffentlich rasche Entscheidungswege von Vorteil für die Investoren

Die regionale Zusammenarbeit und die Stärkung der gutnachbarschaftlichen Beziehungen im westlichen Balkan sind eine der Voraussetzungen für EU-Integration. Wie beurteilen Sie die Fortschritte der Balkanstaaten in diesem Punkt?
Seit den traurigen Ereignissen der Balkankriege zum Zerfall des alten Jugoslawien, dem Ende des Kommunismus und der Zugehörigkeit zu diesem Wirtschaftsraum sind unendliche Fortschritte erzielt worden. Manchmal gibt es in jenem Teil Europas, den wir damals als Westen bezeichnet haben, Vorstellungen, dass solche Veränderungen von einem Tag auf den anderen gemacht werden können. In der Tat braucht aber hier alles seine Zeit, weil nicht nur die Lasten der Vergangenheit, sondern auch die Vorbereitungen auf die EU gemacht werden mussten. Es ist allerdings sehr schwierig, die Qualität dieser Fortschritte generell zu beurteilen. Es gibt große Unterschiede zwischen den einzelnen Ländern, wo wieder die politischen Umstände dafür Verantwortung tragen. Infolge der internen Schwierigkeiten ist z.B. Bosnien-Herzegowina weit hinter anderen Ländern. Generell aber muss festgehalten werden, dass die Situation sehr stabil ist und mit Ausnahme der offenen Frage der Akzeptanz von Kosovo durch Serbien letztlich gute nachbarschaftliche Beziehungen bestehen, aber auch hier bin ich optimistisch, dass die Realität zur Kenntnis genommen wird. Persönlich bin ich überzeugt, dass die EUSDR (Donauregionalinitiative) ein Motor für diese guten nachbarschaftlichen Beziehungen ist. Die gemeinsame Verfassung von Projekten mit grenzüberschreitender Wirkung hat hier eine ganz beachtliche Dynamik.

Welche Wirtschaftssektoren in der Region bergen großes Potenzial und sind besonders attraktiv für ausländische Investoren?
In der Region selber fehlen noch alle Arten von Infrastruktur wie Autobahnen, Eisenbahn, Schifffahrt und Flugverkehr. Das sind natürlich auch große finanzielle Belastungen, aber auch eine Notwendigkeit, die Wirtschaftssektoren zu beleben. Persönlich glaube ich, dass in einigen Ländern qualitative Landwirtschaftsprodukte eine große Chance haben, aber auch Industrieinvestitionen im Sinne von Komponenten für die verschiedensten Wirtschaftszweige. Spezielle Aufmerksamkeit verdient auch der Tourismus, wobei das Eiserne Tor, das Donaudelta und natürlich die kulturellen Highlights von großer Bedeutung sind. Einer der großen Vorteile für ausländische Investoren sind natürlich die Arbeitskosten und hoffentlich die raschen Entscheidungswege für die Investitionen selbst. Ein Vorteil ist die geringe Verschuldung, da es ganz andere Länder sind, die hier Schwierigkeiten haben als Südosteuropa.

Wirtschaftswachstum durch Visa-Liberalisierung

Gemeinsamer Appell für eine schrittweise Überwindung des Visa-Systems in Europa

Fast die Hälfte des deutschen Bruttoinlandsprodukts wird durch Exporte von Waren und Dienstleistungen erwirtschaftet. Mehr als jede andere Volkswirtschaft in Europa ist Deutschland deshalb auf internationale Geschäftskontakte angewiesen und an einem reibungslosen Reiseverkehr interessiert. Im Widerspruch dazu steht die Tatsache, dass es mehr als zwei Jahrzehnte nach dem Fall der Berliner Mauer noch immer nicht gelungen ist, die Visa-Schranken zwischen dem Schengenraum und den Nachbarstaaten im Osten und Südosten Europas abzubauen.

Die Visa-Bürokratie ist ein erheblicher Zeit- und Kostenfaktor für Unternehmen. Dies unterstreicht eine Umfrage des Ost-Ausschusses der Deutschen Wirtschaft unter 200 deutschen Firmen. Die Visa-Pflicht behindert Geschäftskontakte und gegenseitige Investitionen, sie erschwert den Austausch von Fachkräften und sie verursacht Wettbewerbsnachteile im internationalen Konkurrenzkampf. Visa-Schranken kosten Wachstum und sie bremsen den Austausch von Ideen und Wertvorstellungen in Europa.

Daher appellieren sechs Organisation der Deutschen Wirtschaft an die Bundesregierung und die Abgeordneten des Bundestages, die deutschen Anstrengungen für eine Liberalisierung der Visa-Pflicht mit den europäischen Nachbarstaaten des Schengenraums erheblich zu verstärken.

Bezüglich der deutschen Visa-Vergabepraxis werden die folgenden Schritte gefordert:

• Beschleunigung der Eröffnung des Antragsverfahrens durch den Verzicht auf Verpflichtungserklärungen
• Verzicht auf persönliche Anwesenheit der Antragsteller bei den deutschen Auslandsvertretungen
• Schnellere Erreichbarkeit des Status für Mehrjahresvisa
• Weiterer Ausbau der Dokumentenannahme und Weitergabe durch private Dienstleister

Als Folge der demographischen Entwicklung in Deutschland wird die Zahl ausländischer Fachkräfte in den kommenden Jahren gesteigert werden müssen. Deutschland benötigt daher eine echte Willkommenskultur. Die schnelle Liberalisierung des Visa-Systems mit den östlichen Nachbarstaaten der EU ist dafür eine
Grundvoraussetzung.

15th Eurasian Economic Summit 

Präsident Vizekanzler a.D. Dr. Erhard Busek und Generalsekretärin Botschafterin a.D. Dr. Elena Kirtcheva nahmen von 10.-12. April am 15th Eurasian Economic Summit, organisiert von der Marmara Group Strategic and Social Research Foundation, Partner des Vienna Economic Forum, teil, wo sie die Aktivitäten und die Visionen des Vienna Economic Forum präsentierten.

Der Gipfel, der in Istanbul begann und in Izmir endete, wurde von 13 Präsidenten, einem Premierminister, einem Parlamentssprecher, drei Vize-Premiers und 30 Ministern aus 50 Ländern besucht.

Honorary Doctorate for Dr. Günter Geyer, General Manager of Vienna Insurance Group

Vienna Economic Forum congratulates Dr. Günter Geyer, General Manager of Vienna Insurance Group and Member of Vienna Economic Forum, to his honorary title ‘doctor honoris causa’ from the University of Economics in Bratislava.

After the foundation of the Slovak insurance company Kooperativa in 1990, Dr. Geyer was member of the board and he has been chairman of the board since 1998. He contributed significantly to the success of the leading insurance company in Slovakia.

In a solemn ceremony in the premises of the Lower Austrian Government, Secretary General Amb. Dr. Elena Kirtcheva presented the Vienna Economic Forum Award 2011 for the contribution to the economic development on the national and regional level in the countries of Vienna Economic Forum to H.E. Dr. Erwin Pröll, Governor of the Province of Lower Austria, on behalf of the Board of Vienna Economic Forum. Members of the Board and of the Ambassadors Committee of Vienna Economic Forum took part in the ceremony.
